Home Study Costs

Home studies for Domestic Private Adoptions and for International Adoptions generally cost in the range of $2000 to $3000.

Home studies for Domestic Adoption from public agencies are normally free and completed by social workers who work for the agency.

Where expenses can begin to add up are in making your home safe for kids. Some of the things I had to purchase or do to make my home safe included:

* Installing child safety locks on all my lower cupboards

* Installing a hand rail for my 3 step stair case

* Purchasing an appropriate fire extinguisher

* Taking classes to become certified in First Aid and CPR

* Installing a child gate above and below the stairs

* Purchasing a bed, dresser, and linens for the child's room

This alone added up to hundreds of dollars, and I've heard of home preparations for others totaling into the thousands. But if you're ready to be a parent, you're ready to start throwing your money around. Just wait until they become teenagers. My boys have now grown to be 9, 13, and 17, and they are very expensive.
