Home Study Tips

Be honest. Be honest about your sexual preference or gender identity, and be honest about events in your past and your current beliefs.

I've read sites out there saying to lie about or to not disclose that you are gay in your home study. Well, that's about the worst thing you could do, and there are a few reasons why.

Someone WILL find out, either the social worker in the home study process or one of the several people who will suddenly be in your life if you adopt through a public agency. And why would you want to worry about that anyway? You will have to worry about this new child you're bringing into your home - that's enough to worry about.

You won't want to work with an agency who is not accepting of gay people anyway. The whole process will feel ugly to you.

It's most important to be as open and up front as possible in your home study. Home study workers understand that people are human beings. We've all done things in our pasts that we aren't proud of, but it's how you respond and learn from those situations that matters. I had a few huge question marks from my recent past that could have made me very questionable in the eyes of some people, but my home study worker was convinced that I had learned from those mistakes and was fit to be a father.
