International Adoption

LGBT individuals and couples have few options for international adoption. Therefore, single person adoption and then a legal second parent adoption here in the states, if necessary, is probably the way to go when adopting from outside the country. International Boy Single women have many more options than single men. You may be encouraged to not expose your sexual preference in the process, and some agencies may not even want to work with you on an international adoption in order to maintain their working relationship with international officials.

Check out this great article from the Human Rights Campaign website:

International Adoption for LGBT Couples

While international adoptions generally cost less than private adoptions, there are many downsides to adopting internationally. Some of these include:

1. Many children have lived in orphanages and have experienced extreme neglect. Neglect is usually more difficult to work through, psychologically and emotionally, than abuse.

2. There are no Medicaid services offered to children adopted internationally.

3. Limited post-adoption support.

4. For older children, there is a language transition as well, which can be extremely difficult both on the child and on you as parents.

5. Costs can still range from $10,000 to $30,000.

Personally, I studied international adoption extensively in my process of becoming a parent. I loved the idea of having a child from a different culture because I loved the idea of learning about another culture myself in order to maintain the child's heritage.

But when I found out the benefits of the fost-adopt program in Boulder County, where I lived, I chose to go that direction.
